FIRECRACKER CANDLE

Use this candle as a great Independence
 Day centerpiece. This project involves
 combining multiple techniques to
 produce a truly unique candle.

As always, safety is our primary concern
and you should know these safety rules
before proceeding. If you are new to
candle making, you may wish to take a
look at Basics Part 1 and Basics Part 2.
I have created an illustrated version of
 these instructions, however you may
wish to read through this page first.

 Materials
A round pillar mold, star cookie cutter,
pan, knife, and the usual candle making
 supplies.

 Step 1 - Stars
Make a batch of white wax. Pour into a
pan about 1/16 inch thick allow to cool.
Before it is fully cooled make star
cutouts with the cookie cutter. Press most of these against the inside of the
mold to curve them, and allow to set fully. Leave a few flat.

 Step 2 - Blue Chunks
Prepare enough blue wax to fill about one third of the mold. Pour into pans
 and cut into chunks.

 Step 3 - Place Stars
Position a few flat stars at the bottom of mold. Add some blue chunks.
Position some stars around the inside of mold. Add blue chunks to hold
 stars in place.

 Step 4 - Pour Blue
Place all remaining blue chunks back in the melting pot. Heat to 200
degrees F. Pour into mold and allow to set. The next layer should be
poured once this layer has hardened, but before the sides pull away from
 the mold.

 Step 5 - Pour Stripe
Heat up a red wax. Pour a one inch layer. Try to avoid splashing. The next
layer should be poured once this layer has hardened, but before the sides
 pull away from the mold.

 Step 6 - More Stripes
Repeat step 5 with white wax, then alternate, red and white wax until the
mold is filled. Allow to cool fully.

 Step 7 - Finishing
Remove from mold, and trim wick.

American-Flag Fan

Celebrate the country's birthday with the fanfare it's
due waving a handmade fan that looks like the
American flag. Here's
what you'll need to
make one: a 17-by-5
1/2-inch piece of
white paper, a ruler, a
pencil, red and blue
markers, a pushpin, three plastic drinking straws, a
paper fastener and tape.

In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, measure and
mark a rectangle that's 8 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches
high. Have your child draw a bunch of stars within the
rectangle and then color around them with blue marker.
Divide the rest of the paper into stripes and color every
other one red. Now fold the paper accordion style.

Next, create a frame for the fan. Use the pushpin to
poke a hole through each straw, 1 inch from the bottom.
Then, join the three straws with the paper fastener.
Finally, spread apart the top of the straw frame, fit the
flag onto the frame, and tape it in place.

PATRIOTIC HAT
Need:
18X24 inch sheet
of manila paper (or
newspaper)
red paint
white paint
blue paint
brushes
red-white-and
blue crete paper
scissors
crayons
scraps of
red-white-blue
paper
cement or glue
any other misc.
decorations to add to the hat

Fold the paper in half the short way. Find the
middle point in the top folded edge of the paper.

Make a small crease at this point. Next fold the
right edge of the paper into the middle point.

Then fold the left edge of the paper into the
middle point. Your shape now looks like a
pyramid. Now fold the front bottom flap over the
hat as far as it will go. Turn the hat over and
repeat the fold with the remaining flap. Paste
the two flap edges together. Now the hat can be
decorated in any number of ways. It can be
painted with patriotic colors, decorated with
paper stars and stripes, colored with crayons,
etc. Streamers of crepe paper can be added to
one side, or at the top.

Film Canister Rockets

You will need:

The center tube from a roll of toilet paper
        A paper plate
        White film canister
        Some water
        One Alka Seltzer tablet

First you need to make your rocket launcher. Tape the tube to the paper plate in an upright
position. Decorate as desired. Put a small amount of water in the film canister, then take it,
the launcher, and an Alka Seltzer tab outside.

Put the launcher on the ground in a clear area, drop the Alka Seltzer into the canister, then
quickly put the lid on the canister, drop it in the launcher upside down and stand back!

This is a great experiment. We found that you can even use half a tab and get good results.
See whose can "fly" the highest. I've been told this also works with baking soda and
vinegar, but haven't tried it. Have fun!
